Changing belief system in contemporary India

Every morning she woke up to serve her family; this is what a woman’s life was like 70 years back. Her identity was reduced to being someone’s wife and someone’s mother. Her sole purpose of being was to handle the household and nurture those around her. Growing up cooking was her first priority and her education and dreams came second. Unaware of her surroundings and her rights, a women’s horizon was her family and she was happy in her world.

Every morning she woke up wanting to fight; this is what a women’s life was 30 years back. She had found her voice and she had started her fight against the male dominance of the society and the “assumed” role of women. She was aware of her right and her dreams and was ready to fight for them. The war, rather the revolution, had started. At this point women realized that no one can tell them not to dream or not to aim for the sky. They knew that the world was their horizon. But in this orthodox society, change wasn’t easy. Those who fought harder everyday were able to break free, the rest were suppressed by the still very rigid social system. Women found their voice but the society didn’t hear it, they criticized it, suppressed it, turned a deaf ear to it and sometimes reacted with violence. But the fact was that women had found their voice and no one was able to break their collective soul.

Every morning she wakes up to be who she wants to be. This is the woman of tomorrow. She has won her fight; partially. She has changed the beliefs of the society and made the society realize that women are a force to be reckoned with. She has the support of her parents and her main purpose in life is to achieve everything she wants and hopes for. The world is her oyster and the sky is her limit. She can do whatever she wants and be whoever she wants. No longer can the society suppress the voice of truth and the voice of change. Now, women have a voice that people listen to. There are people who give looks and pass comments, but women speak louder. The fact is that in spirit, women are way stronger than anyone else and with this and years of falling down and getting back up again and again, they deserve to be their own master.

For the past century, women have gradually found their voice and forced the society to hear them. Their strength and their never sleeping determination have helped them to finally change what the society thinks and expects of them. Today they have a choice, a chance to choose their own paths and find their own destinies. They have a system that is ready to fight with them and they know that if there are people ready to pull them down, they also have people to help them back up.

It cannot be said that their fight is over for there are still people unwilling to let go of the norms of yesterday and hear the voice of today and tomorrow, but the fight is reaping rewards for today when a woman shouts, people listen. The women of yesterday, today and tomorrow say this to the rest, “Speak louder than everyone for what you believe in and fight harder everyday for what you want”.
